What Was January
January has traditionally been my jimmy jam, what with all the starting over in crisp empty notebooks and life makeover planning. I have not one but seven to-do list apps on my phone, always feeling I'm a heartbeat from unlocking the secrets of self-realization completely, thereby guaranteeing myself an honorary degree from someplace fabulous just for being that awesome. I love the inward-looking that January enables, curled on the couch in the morning with coffee and a blanket for a sweet spell because it's too cold outside to take anything seriously until at least 9am.
At least, that WAS my experience of January. Back when life held multitudes and promised splendor and delight, before we elected a sexist tyrant with white supremacy ties to the highest office in the country and I started spending every day oscillating between panic and grief about my people (who are pretty gay, multi-racial and rad), and my beloved community of immigrants, artists, single moms with housing assistance, first-generation teenagers in the neighborhood community college, etc, and wondering how the fuck we are all going to survive and deal with a giant racist boot trying to stomp on us for the next four years.
